Mother's Day and Mementos with Penny Goldstone

It’s no secret that our mum’s are the reason we are fashion lovers. First, we attempt to balance in her heels, play with her makeup (to her dismay), and rifle through her jewellery collection trying on everything in sight. Then as we get older, we learn how to cleverly ‘borrow’ her vintage pieces and simply ‘forget’ to give them back.

Our mums and mother figures have shaped us into who we are today, and no matter the day of the year, they make the world go round.

In honour of Mother’s Day this year, MISHO sat down with Marie Claire’s fashion editor, Penny Goldstone, to talk about her journey with motherhood, fashion, and how she’ll be celebrating this special day.

What is your favourite part of being a mother?

Seeing my daughter grow up and develop her own little personality, and to be able to see the world through her eyes is such a joy.

What advice would you give to new mothers who are navigating the new style of life that comes with motherhood?

Don't put pressure on yourself and try not to compare yourself to your pre-pregnancy self. One of my mum friends told me that 'everything is a phase', and that helped me when going through tougher periods like sleep regression. And just to soak it all up, it's a cliché but it really does go by so quickly.

Your style is very effortlessly chic and comfortable. How has becoming a mother changed the way you look at fashion?

Thank you! I've definitely had to tweak my style a little bit to adapt to my new life. I am a big dress-wearer but I do navigate more towards separates and clothes I can move in for when we do activities like soft play and walks in the park. So definitely a little bit more casual.

We love the way you style our Sirena Cuff. The perfect accessories can really make an outfit. How big of a role does jewellery play in your wardrobe?

I've always loved jewellery and how it can instantly transform an outfit. I have the pieces I wear all the time, like my wedding and engagement rings, and then I love to play around with other bits depending on my mood. At the moment I love chunky pieces like the cuff, and mixing gold and silver.

Are there any special pieces you are saving for your daughter when she’s older?

I have a pinky ring with a diamond C on it that I'll keep for her to wear when she's older, and I have some family heirlooms too that have been passed onto me that I will in time pass onto her.

How will you be spending your Mother’s Day? Do you have any special plans?

We love reading books in bed in the morning as a family so we'll start the day with that and then we'll all go for a nice lunch. A lovely chilled day.
